The story

I just took Ice cream for granted. Never really thought about where it came from, who was the first to discover it. I always thought it was something automatic like sliced bread. It was just there.

Well no. I still need to verify this story but what I was told Ice Cream was discovered in France. It was somewhere during the middle ages that a great king was complaining about the desert. And he wanted something refreshing cold during the summer months.

He ordered his wisest chef to come up with a solution to this problem. After long thinking the chef waited till the winter and when the day was the coldest he started making large Ice boxes. These ice boxes he carried downstairs into the basement. Imagine back then that the basements were cold and made completely out of stone and rocks. So when something was cold it would remain cold.

The chef was already familiar with vanilla, the sweet taste of it. When the summer approached he cut up the vanilla and mixed it with the ice from the basement, added a little milk to it from the cows for consistency and voila, he made ice cream for the king.

Thousands of flavors

The world know many flavors. Like more than a thousand flavors to be exact.

The triplets, best known as Vanilla, Strawberry and Chocolate are the most familiar ones. And the introduction ice cream to kids.

While most grown ups don’t really tend to take these anymore, when made good these are still the kicker in your mouth. It depends on how they are made, how fresh the ingredients and so on. Because the taste can be amazing, truly amazing.

If you use real strawberries and no artificial coloring and enhancement it can be wonderful. This is the same for the other two flavors.

However Chocolate is one flavor which can be scaled down to all sorts of flavors. From dark chocolate, to lighter milk chocolate to a beautiful mix of chocolate and crunchy pieces in side.

The fact

Although I loved the story from previously it’s according to others not the real or only truth. But of course more people can discovered it, doesn’t necessarily have to be the ones who made it into the books.

According to several sources, real Ice cream was discovered by the Chinese and ancient Greeks.

The Greeks used to eat snow flakes mixed with honey and fruit from the market. The Chinese already started to mix it with Milk and Rice. Yes Rice. They had their own special technique to cool it.

Rome just went to the mountains, brought in the ice and mixed it with fruit. Imagine back then, after all the ‘plain’ food experiencing ice for the first time. That would be an amazing feeling.

But in all honesty the story from my previous post was sort of right. It was the first ice cream made known to the Europeans and which became famous throughout the world. And this was known as Sorbet ice.

Ice cream of many varieties in Italy

Being an ice cream freak like me and have the privilege of working for an ice cream related company the chances are you have to study & work abroad. With study I meant, I received extra schooling to know more about the ice cream making business.

The company I work for is a large strict but good company and they take really well care of their employees. It was time to go and I had to go to Italy (where else right). Before I will say it was amazing I was still excited and needed to be prepared becoming an expat in Italy.

America is such a different place and in all fairness I’ve never really traveled internationally. Being an expat instead of just a tourist would be very different. I had to think of things which you normally don’t think of like finding a good international health insurance. Make sure the service of the insurance is great and speak English. If they have mixed employees and only could speak Italian I couldn’t really get help. Continue Reading →

Where else

The world has so many things yet to be discovered. One of these things is the little place called Namja Town in Tokyo. Ikebukuro to be exact.

They have literarily the craziest ice cream flavors you can imagine.

Starting with the basic flavors it already goes south real fast. Black sesame (yes really dark black ice cream) towards really weird tastes like chicken (!) and crab (!). I am dead serious. I have been there, tasted it and did not like it.

But yes it was great fun, a really well worth experience and trip. Only in Japan, where else right.
